A scenic drive into St. Paul’s district, favoured by the colonial powers because it is close to town but noticeably cooler, being higher, will take you to the enchanting garden and historic house at the Tower Estate. A highly individual garden to match a heritage house, built 1913, that is unique on this island.
The two acres of cultivated ornamental gardens and orchards are the result of the vision and dedication of the person who will be your host: Victoria Slinger. Take a leisurely walk with the garden’s creator and sip on a fresh rum punch or local juices while she shares her insights and artistic plan with you.
The beds have been designed to echo an English herbaceous border translated into a tropical setting. Within each bed the emphasis is on featuring a variety of similar plants showing the large range within each group. There are also smaller beds devoted to bromeliads, spices, and plants which attract butterflies. Dotted around are a number of flowering trees: immortelle, poui, flamboyant, king of flowers and the orchid tree, which flower at different times.
The orchard contains many fruit trees: mango, ‘French cashew’, golden apple, avocado, guava, carambola (’star fruit’), banana and citrus, also bearing at different times during the year. There are also a number of flowering vines, the beautiful jade vine with its turquoise blooms in the spring and the passionflower, garlic vine and Rangoon creeper which can be seen all year round.
